The Xiaobaihua Shaoxing Opera Troupe in Shaoxing was established in 1986. Since then it has produced and performed over twenty full-length repertories and more than forty episodic items. It is the only troupe which is superb in both singing and martial arts scenes, while Shaoxing opera is mainly specialized on delicate and tender artistic style.

The troupe have a number of outstanding pieces to their credit. The story of General Ma Long (adapted from Shakespeare’s Macbeth), The Butterfly Lovers and Legend of Mulan are well known to westerners. Besides these three, Lu Wen Long, Lady General Mu Gui Ying, The Unforgettable Encounter, Legend of White Snake, the Magic Lantern are the most well received by local audiences.

In its brief history, the Troupe has toured a large part of the country. The productions in Shanghai, Jiangsu, Nanjing, Shandong, Tianjin, Xian, Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei and Fujian received unprecedented popularity and earned critical acclaims. Moreover, the Troupe has had the honor of being invited to perform in Beijing and all abroad China. It has toured Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan as well.

The Troupe is credited as the First Rank Opera Troupe in Zhejiang Province respectively in 1988 and 1990. In 1995, it was elected as one of the progressive groups in China.
